Victorian Conservatory Designs
Victorian Conservatory Designs has proved to be the most popular of all extensions to the home for at least a hundred years and throughout the period the number of different conservatory designs has been legion.
Victorian Conservatory Designs
It was something of a surprise to me that Victorian Conservatory Designs have been running for so long, and we are all familiar with the Victorian Conservatory style today. But if conservatories have been running for so long, it begs the question; what did the Victorians themselves want for a conservatory? When I discovered these pictures, they blew my imagination, since I had never even considered anything so large or so lavish!.
This Victorian Conservatory is a very lavish affair in its own right built. Built against a comparatively modest-looking house wall that itself would not look out of place in any UK town today, simply adds to the amazing contrast between today’s conservatories and those of the not-so-distant past.
This particular conservatory design was 16ft wide and 44ft long (13.4m x 4.8m). The interior view highlights the Victorian love affair with ferns and other foliage plants to create an exotic environment. Notice the elaborate cast iron ornamentation in the roof.
The ‘ridge and furrow’ conservatory roof design (pictured left) was used by Foster and Pearson to bring to client’s attention that this design could have large open spans even where height, beneath the first floor windows, was at a premium.
Foster and Pearson you may recall were among the very best greenhouse manufacturers in the UK. They not only built the greenhouses and horticultural engineering works at Winsford Towers. They were the preferred greenhouse manufacturer’s of many of Queen Victoria’s own greenhouses.
This corner Victorian conservatory design highlights a comparatively modest addition to the corner of the salon which could transform any Victorian or Edwardian home.
If you haven’t already noticed yet, the conservatory plans for all these conservatory designs are located in the corner of each conservatory design.
The large conservatory on the left, features a projected entrance and one octagonal end, 55ft x 25ft (17m x 7.6m).
Imagine then, the dimensions of the conservatory design on the left.
Once again, note how the adjoining house is mundane by comparison.
When the Victorian wealthy wanted to really wanted to ‘splash out’, when money was not really a problem and city planning didn’t exist… There were some amazing conservatory plans available… Even so, it looks here like the conservatory here was more valuable than the house!
Edwardian Conservatory Design
The next five conservatory designs are from the early 20th century, they are Edwardian conservatory design examples.
They are considerably less ornate, less elaborate and the designs illustrate features which are still recognisable in contemporary ‘Victorian’ conservatory designs.
Generally speaking, those designs which are not painted white are made from teak. The properties to which they are attached to is also interesting to note.
